Christmas Greetings to You
December 24, 2009
Hello

Christmas Greetings 2009

As 2009, comes quickly to a close, I would like to extend Christmas Greetings from my family to yours.

I hope that you have had a blessed year as you have been working closely in your family. I hope that your family ties have been strengthened, that your children have progressed and most importantly, that you have all been brought closer to God through both the joys and trials of this year.

May God bless you all in 2010!

Some Thoughts on Christmas Traditions

In Australia, like so many other places in the world, we celebrate all sorts of Days: "White Ribbon Day" "Go Home on Time day", "Boardies Day" , "Water Safety week", "Thankyou Day", "International Day of solidarity with Palestinian People" Day on Nov 29th.

In December, in Australia, there will be 17 Days on the Calendar of Key Events.

Now if you or I would be on the committee of one of these celebration days, we would be eager to promote our day and we would probably feel very offended when someone doesn’t realize what “Day” it is and even worse than that – what it means?

Imagine if you’re planning and in charge of all the significant events around "International Mountain Day" or "Global Handwashing Day" or "Buzz Day" and someone asks you, “What’s that?” Since it means so much to you, you would be horrified that someone else doesn’t realize the significance of the day.

Well, I feel a bit the same about Christmas. Even though Christmas has the word, “Christ” in it – He really takes a backseat to most of our Christmas Traditions – He’s rarely brought up or mentioned, less and less presented on Christmas cards, sidelined in public education and preschools – most certainly, not the centre of attention or focal point of “HIS” day!

That’s why I liked a quote from E.B.White, “To perceive Christmas through its wrapping becomes more difficult with every year." Even though I like all sorts of Christmas Traditions (we have a lovely day with friends, good food, good company, a special Christmas Eve celebration with our own immediate family), the one tradition that I really love is going to Church.

Going to Church helps me to put Jesus back into the centre. We sing songs about His birth, listen to Bible readings about the historical event, and spend time meditating on the significance of His Birth.

Here’s another quote from an unknown author, “I am well within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that were ever built, all the parliaments that have ever sat, and all the kings that have ever ruled put together have not affected the life of man upon this earth like this one solitary personality... All time dates from His birth.”

Jesus is certainly the centre – we even recognize that in our calendars and so I’m thankful that in the midst of the Christmas traditions and festivities, spending time at Church and with God, can help me keep the focus and concentrate on the real meaning of Christmas through its wrappings.

May you be blessed on Christmas Day and during this season as you ponder the Christmas Gift God has given to us in Jesus.
