Response to Carolyn re-dolch sight words NEW
by: Marianne

Hi Carolyn,
Thankyou for taking time to respond and write your thoughts.

I had not read any of what Samuel Blumenfeld wrote and found it very interesting. I can understand the danger of only using sight words and training children to memorize word patterns.

Although I have always taught my children using a phonetic base, I have used the sight words as a practice base for early readers. They would play with the words, sound them out, and match them when they were beginning readers.

This enabled my young early readers to recognize (using phonics) many of the words when they were just beginning to read.

I have not used the sight words in isolation to phonics - rather used them in conjunction with the phonics reading program.

Sight Words? Really????!!! NEW
by: Carolyn Forte

I was about to complement you on your reading advice and then I saw Dolch Sight Words! Please, please read Samuel Blumenfield's research on sight reading. I can tell you from my own experience as a first grade teacher in 1972-74 that sight reading is a disaster and you don't ever want to encourage a child to try to memorize a whole word. All English words are phonetic as anyone who has used Spaulding's Writing Road to Reading knows. You recommend it, so why the Dolch Sight Words? Blumenfeld uncovered research that showed that sight reading was/is the prime cause of dyslexia. Please do homeschoolers a favor and ditch the sight words. You are right on with your reading advice otherwise. All I did was teach my kids the code and provide them with easy phonetic readers like Primary Phonics and Hop on Pop. They read when they were ready just as Raymond Moore said they would.

sight word game
by: alyson

A little boy I tutor just loves cars, so anything I do with cars is a winner. One day, I decided to put his sight word cards on the table in a maze of "roads" and he drove his little toy car over the words he could read. He zipped right through our little town and read nearly all the words without too much work.
