While taking my daughter to the grocery store I always make sure that I am buying things on sale if they are the better deal. However my daughter saw a large bag of chips family size that she thought was a better deal. So we do a comparison in the store. No notepad or anything using only our minds. My daughter looked at the different sizes of chips. Looked at the prices of them and calculated which one was the better deal and figured out that buying two smaller bags on sale was still cheaper than buying one large size family bag of chips. Not only does this give a child a good chance to work on their math away from home but it is also used for practical life experiences that will be used when they get older.
Not using a notepad seems to help her really focus on the problem and she actually does math better in her head than if she is looking at a piece of paper.
