Help! I Can't See the Dining Room Table Anymore

by Linda
(Annandale, MN USA)

I am a 65 year young widow, with custody of three of my great-grandchildren. They are a dd 8yo, another dd 7yo, and a ds 5yo. We are homeschooling, and they are all developmentally delayed, so finding the right things that work for them is a challenge, as they all learn differently.

I also babysit a two and a half yo little girl, and a 6 month old little boy.

Oh! I almost forgot, I am going to college online, too, for a Master's degree in Healthcare.

Right now is 'finals week' for me. I have assignments coming out my ears. Next week, I am going to start homeschool for the kids, in earnest. So, I need to have all there work figured out very soon. Everywhere I look there is a mess of binders, notebooks, textbooks, library books, homeschool books, paper, crayons, etc. And then of course there is the mail. Actually, every horizontal surface in the house is full of school stuff!!!!!!!!

The rest of the house suffers because there just is not enough time in the day and night to get everything done. Oh! And the dryer broke, so I have laundry hanging all over the place, drying.

So, this is why I need to have help getting organized. Any questions? LOL!

Thank you,
Linda Hansen

How To Organize So You Can Eat
by: Anonymous

You may want to by a roll of gift wrapping paper (plain)from the dollar store. Hang it on the wall, get out your sharpie marker, and start categorizing!

Draw vertical lines to make however many columns you need per person. You can write each name above each column.

Start writing the basic goals you need right away, then goals you need within a week, within a month, so you get the idea of the big picture.

Also get some boxes, label each by taping securely a sheet of zerox paper, and marking what is in the box. Try to coordinate these boxes with your goals chart. Once labeled and filled, put the boxes in line with each name on the chart. Then start to organize the boxes according to this week, next week, next month, etc. per child and you included!

All supplies should clearly be in a box - art, office, etc. Clear off your table and keep it cleared. You need to instill habits that work to keep your house sane. The children need to know this. They can help you if you keep this clean-up fast paced. Once organized it stays that way, until you decide to make further refinements.

The stuff you won't need right away - can be covered with pretty, or plain fabric to make your home look restful to the eye. Hope this helps.
