Homeschool Music Resources

As a homeschooling family, we include a great deal of homeschool music resources across our homeschool curriculum areas. A discussion with other homeschool mums spurred me on to think how we use music to teach across other homeschooling subjects.

Here's a few which I really love using.

Science

Here are some fun ways to learn all sorts of science facts.

Lyrical Life Science #1 With CD

Lyrical Life Science #1 With CD
By Lyrical Learning

Topics volume 1 addresses include scientific method, living things, invertebrates, coldblooded vertebrates, birds, classification, algae/fungi/nonvascular plants, vascular plants, protozoa, genetics, viruses, and bacteria.

Along with each CD comes a textbook which expands upon the information summarized in the songs. The textbooks, about 100 pages each, are generously illustrated with line drawings and touches of humor. They include song lyrics and simple music. The corresponding workbook lessons offer matching, fill-in-the-blank, essay, and labeling exercises.

Answer keys are at the back. Although originally wirtten for sixth graders, the content reflects some of what we find in typical high school life science texts. Whatever level you choose to use these for, they remain supplements rather than comprehensive courses. While this approach is not for all students, it does offer a rare alternative for auditory learners.

Volume 2-Mammals, Ecology, and Biomes, uses tunes like "Erie Canal," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," and Irish Washerwoman" to teach about bats, carnivores, isectivores, pinnepeds, ecology, biomes, toothless mammals, manatees, whales, dolphins, and single-family orders. You won't wade through evolutionary nonsense. Along with each CD comes a textbook which expands upon the information summarized in the songs. Volume 3- The Human Body, begins with an introductory song on cells, genes, tissue, organs, and organ systems. Then it focuses on each of the body systems. You will recognize some of the tunes like "Caissons Go Rolling Along" and "Red River Valley," but some others like "Goober Peas," "Old Joe Clark," and "Tarantella" will be less familiar. "The Skeletal System" sung to "Tarantella" is a familiar pirate tune that takes "... the thigh bone is connected to the hip bone..." to a whole new level. Along with each CD comes a textbook which expands upon the information summarized in the songs. Beethoven's Wig CDs

I've just heard about these! Very interesting and fun to listen to.

Zany lyrics set to the greatest hits of classical music provide a fun foundation for classical music that will last a lifetime.

Filled with fact and fancy about the world's most notable composers and their compositions, Beethoven's Wig is the perfect blend of high brow and hijinks, lunacy and learning.
