The Hydrogen Balloon

The Hydrogen Balloon

OK..This is a super fun and exciting science project.

We will make a hydrogen balloon and watch our balloon rise to the sky just like a helium filled balloon....but with Hydrogen gas instead!!

WARNING::::: The gas produced will be very hot and protective gear is a must!!! Doing this science project outside is a strong suggestion.

Materials needed:

*Medium Balloon (1)
*Sodium Hydroxide (2 Tablespoons)
*Water (4 tablespoons)
*Aluminum strips-Tin Foil or strips of aluminum cans (8)
*String (2)
*Glass bottle (like a wine bottle or oil bottle)

Steps:

1. Put aluminum strips into the base of the glass bottle

2. Mix Sodium Hydroxide and water together in a separate container.
~~~WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR--GLOVES/GOGGLES~~~
3. Quickly attach balloon to the mouth of the glass bottle.
4. Watch as the chemical reaction forms Hydrogen Gas and inflates the balloon.
5. Tie a string around the end of the balloon and slowly lift the balloon off the mouth of the bottle.
6. The balloon will rise to the sky!!!
